We Are Still Here

Pomo Artists and Our Cultural Landscape

We Are Still Here: Pomo Artists and Our Cultural Landscape highlights contemporary artwork of Native Pomo artists and reflects the resilience of the Pomo Tribe and the strong connections to their land as a place for ceremonies, family events, gatherings, and religious observances.

Featured artists include Silver Galleto (Southern Pomo), Bonnie Lockhart (Northern Pomo, Kai Poma), Meyo Marrufo (Eastern Pomo), Clint McKay (Dry Creek Pomo, Wappo and Wintun), Robin Meely (Southern Pomo), Kathleen Smith (Bodega Miwuk, Dry Creek Pomo) and Eric Wilder (Southwest Pomo).  The artists come from different Pomo regions and their art honors the cultural landscape and lives of the people in their communities.

Sharing powerful stories of the Pomo people by merging contemporary art with traditional culture, We Are Still Here reminds us of the history and heritage of native peoples that cannot be forgotten.

The timing of this exhibition corresponds with the 200th anniversary of the  Mission San Francisco Solano located in Sonoma Town Square. The exhibition, merging contemporary art with traditional culture and incorporating both accurate history and living traditions that continue today, connects with Mission commemorative themes and activities. SVMA’s art education program, A.R.T.S, is planning to coordinate educational activities and programming with the Mission and Parks Department of Sonoma (custodian of the Mission) that reflect the impact and long-term consequences of the Mission.
