Silent Light: San Francisco and the Art of California Zen

Presented in partnership with the Lucid Art Foundation

The exhibition concept was originally presented at Monterey Museum of Art and is being expanded by SVMA as part of the Further Triennial, a contemporary art initiative launching in Northern California in 2027. Silent Light explores the influence of Zen Buddhism on artists and thinkers associated with California’s counterculture of the 1950s and ’60s. This exhibition presents select Bay Area artists who were highly influenced by the Asian aesthetics of Zen and pursued organic materials and forms in their practice.

Artists in the exhibition include Ruth Asawa, Bernice Bing, JB Blunk, Jay DeFeo, Claire Falkenstein, Sam Francis, Sabro Hasegawa, Masatoyo Kishi, Arthur Monroe, Arthur Okamura, Gordon Onslow Ford, Wolfgang Paalen, Hodo Tobase, and Peter Voulkos, among others.
