Recollecting Imogen from Two Former Groupies: Judy Dater and Chris Johnson

Join us at SVMA as we present renowned California photographers Judy Dater and Chris Johnson in conversation, talking about a time of their lives, in the early to mid-seventies, when they were young, emerging artists who had “fallen under the spell” of the venerable elder Imogen Cunningham. In 1974 Dater, who described “Imo” as “the mentor of my dreams,” made what is one of the most famous portraits of Imogen Cunningham when she paired the 91-year-old photographer with a young nude model named Twinka Thiebaud in the forest of Yosemite. And Johnson, who knew Cunningham the last four years of her life, said his experience with her was that of an “artist under the influence.” The remarkable double-exposure portrait of Johnson by Cunningham, titled Chris, is also on view in Seen & Unseen.
