Exhibition Reception: Richard Mayhew: Inner Terrain

Join us in celebrating our new exhibition: Richard Mayhew: Inner Terrain

A rare and timely exhibition of the artwork of Richard Mayhew (b. 1924), featuring two dozen paintings that speak to American arts, culture, and history. Mayhew’s African American, Shinnecock, and Cherokee-Lumbee ancestries inform his dreamlike landscapes, which are saturated in vibrant colors. Contrary to most traditional landscape painters, he works from memory, laying down fields of abstract color on the canvas, as if in a trance. When viewed up close, we are seduced by the paint itself which ultimately reveals yet another layer of Mayhew’s genius.

Exhibition Reception: Saturday, September 23, 2023
5-7:00 p.m. – Members and General Public
Event is free for SVMA members, and $10 for non-members.

Online registration is full. Tickets may be made available at the door at the time of the event.
