Drawing Abstractly with Multimedia Techniques

Most paper works in SVMAs exhibit Labyrinth of Forms: Women and Abstraction, 1930-1950 are printed using etching, lithography, woodcut, silkscreen, intaglio, embossing, and monoprint techniques, plus a few works that use oil paint, gouache, tempera, watercolor, and collage. In nearly every case, each work of art started with a graphite drawing.

Artist and museum educator, Miki Hsu Leavey offers three different ways for you to play with experimental drawing by focusing on one aspect of Abstraction. We will look at the works in our gallery, see a short slide show of other well-known abstract artists of the period, and then draw our own abstract sketches with graphite.

We welcome and encourage you to bring your own drawing, painting, or printmaking materials. You can also choose from materials and tools that we will provide such as heavy-weight paper; a range of graphite pencils from soft to hard; linocut tools; a limited selection of acrylic paints and watercolors; oil and chalk pastel kits; and a mixed variety of collage papers. Experiment with our mini-press to work with embossing and monoprints.
