M. Louise Stanley is known and beloved for her quirky, spontaneous style and quizzical characters (including herself) and the humorous, fantastical narratives they convey in her work. What one learns, however, when talking with “Lulu” and visiting her studio, is that most of her images stem from actual events. In this exhibition, selections of photographs, sketchbooks, studies, and complete works from Stanley’s personal archives, as well as finished paintings and sculptures from Bay Area collections, come together to reveal Stanley’s real-life experiences and escapades, her way of interpreting them, and her artistic process from initial concept to finished work.
