![]() ![]() | Puzzles As Art Curated by Nancy Mintz & George Miller JUNE 20 - AUGUST 16, 2009 What exactly is the connection between the world of puzzles and the world of art? Are the pictorial and sculptural elements of three-dimensional puzzles enough to exalt them into the realm of fine art, or are there other matters to consider? This exhibition raises these and other provocative questions and explores possible answers through a close look at the puzzling nature of aesthetics and the aesthetic nature of puzzles. Included are Nine Linked Rings and other antique puzzles from China, dexterity puzzles from France, and work from contemporary artists who blur the boundaries between sculpture and puzzle. Artists included are Miguel Barrocal, a leading Spanish sculptor, George Hart of New York, Akio Kamei of Japan, Oskar van Deventer of the Netherlands, Lee Krasnow and Bathsheba of California, and many others. These works have in common an undeniable delight in form, the subtlety of illusion grounded in the solidity of sculpture, and a sense of playfulness associated with puzzles. Beneath all of this, however, these puzzles also offer us an unlikely synthesis of the two fundamental cornerstones of the human experience: mathematics and aesthetics. The enigmatic nature and true value of these puzzling objects lies in their ability to generate questions and contemplation long after the riddle has been solved or last piece of the puzzle has been put in place.
